Phillips Claims Second Win of 2008.1

Tim Phillips (55) climbed five positions en route to his Michigan victory.

To win a championship, you have to have a little bit of luck.  No one knows that more than SNS points leader Wade Kilpatrick (2), who has notched five wins, including a three-peat (Dover, Lowe’s, Darlington), in this final season of Truck racing.  And as luck would have it, Kilpatrick self-spun coming off turn 3 on lap 2 of Sunday’s Cool City Customs 200 at Michigan, bringing out the first of three cautions on the night.  The outside polesitter would recover, however, turning near disaster into a third place finish, pretty much locking up the SNS title.  Tim Phillips came from his sixth place start to win the race, followed under the yellow by Cup Series Michigan winner Greg Netherwood (80), and Kilpatrick.

Polesitter Netherwood was strong all night, leading the most laps (27/50), and but for a race-ending yellow, might have had a shot at overtaking Phillips. Ironically, it was contact between Netherwood and Randy “Baby Huey” James (99) on lap 48 that brought out that final caution period and sewed up the victory for the Mello Yello Silverado.

Only two races remain in the hunt for the final SNS Championship.  Will Kilpatrick hang on for the title?  Can Phillips (-192 points) reel him in?  Only time will tell, as the series thunders into the Milwaukee Mile next week.
