Going into the Homestead 125 tonight, Mike Husby led Jon Doble by 3 points. With the scoring system in place for the series, it was going to be highly unlikely that Doble would score enough points to take the title. Needing a win and not being nearly as quick as Husby, it looked impossible.
Add in a spin off of turn 2 that didn’t bring out a caution and his day was pretty much over. Several laps later, a spin by Kevin Bartelt changed the complexion of the race when the field was bunched up again.
On the race’s third and final caution, it was only Doble and Patrick Hahe who worked their way down pit road for fresh tires. This would end up being the critical call of the race as it put Doble with just a couple laps of making it the rest of the way on the fuel in his tank. Meaning no more pit stops.
Meanwhile, the Mike Husby was doing everything he needed to do to bring home the championship. During the long run to the end, Husby spent it challenging for the lead. When he hit pit road for his final pit stop with 18 laps to go, he was running second.
When all was said and done, it was Doble who crossed the line as he ran out of fuel to win the race and the championship by just a single point.
The fall season is over. Expect an announcement and decision on what we plan to do for a winter series in the next two weeks.
